EVP & COO
Executive Mosaic is honored to announce John Hynes, TASC president and CEO, as the newest inductee into the Wash 100, the premier group of leaders who create value for the American public and execute strategic vision at the intersection of the public and private sectors.
Hynes elevated to the chief executive post at TASC in November 2013 a little less than a year after assuming the COO role at the Chantilly, Va.-based contractor. Hynes had rejoined TASC in 2011 as senior vice president of the defense and civil group around 10 years after the end of his first stint with the company, which ran from 1990 to 2001.
“I had a fond place in my heart for the company, since it was where I started my career,” Hynes told the Washington Post. Prior to joining the private sector, Hynes served eight years in the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator, an intelligence analyst and department head at the Naval Operational Intelligence Center.
He rose to become director of a business unit focused on geospatial systems and advanced text processing during his first stint with TASC.
Now in the chief executive position, Hynes said he is investing in research and TASC’s talent pipeline “to be sure that where we are spending our money internally is aligning with what customers are wanting to buy,” he told the Washington Post.
He earlier noted in 2012 that “in this time of tight budgets and unpredictable threats, it is essential that we do everything we can to be an even more responsive, agile, and customer mission-focused company.”
When considering his approach to leadership, Hynes told the Post “you often think of leaders as being vibrant, outspoken, strong personalities.”
“That’s usually not my approach. I was surprised that my subtler approach had a tremendous impact on people. I found them wanting to follow my lead even though I wasn’t necessarily demanding it.”
“I was leading by example.”
Executive Mosaic extends its congratulations to John and the rest of the TASC organization.
