Executive Mosaic is glad to announce Michael Vickers, defense undersecretary for intelligence, as the latest official to be selected for induction into the Wash100, the premier group of leaders who drive growth and innovation at the intersection of the public and private sectors.
Vickers was confirmed to the post in March 2011 through a unanimous Senate vote and holds the dual role of defense intelligence director within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, where he reports to current DNI James Clapper.
In his role at the Pentagon, Vickers oversees the National Security Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, National Reconnaissance Office and intelligence components within combatant commands and military services.
Before taking his current position, Vickers served as the nation’s first-ever assistant defense secretary for special operations/low-intensity and interdependent capabilities, a role he held for close to four years.
The Pentagon says he helped spearhead the U.S.’ strategy in Afghanistan and Iraq during that time and advised the secretary on counterterrorism, special activities and the area of irregular warfare.
“Irregular warfare will be the most likely form of conflict in the couple decades ahead,” Vickers predicted in a July 2008 interview with a Council for Foreign Relations publication.
Before starting his civilian executive career, Vickers served as a non-commissioned special forces officer in the Army and an operations officer in the CIA.
This year represents our fifth annual Wash100 award selection. The Wash100 is the premier group of private and public sector leaders selected by Executive Mosaic's organizational and editorial leadership as the most influential leaders in the GovCon sector. These leaders demonstrate skills in leadership, innovation, achievement, and vision.
