Executive Mosaic is honored to announce Joe Echevarria, CEO of Deloitte LLP, as the newest inductee into the Wash 100, the premier group of leaders who create value for the American public and execute strategic vision at the intersection of the public and private sectors.
Echevarria has spent 35 years with Deloitte, becoming an audit partner in 1988 and going on to hold a variety of leadership positions across the firm.
Prior to elevating to chief executive, Echevarria took on the role of U.S. managing partner for operations in 2007, where he was responsible for the management and operations of Deloitte’s four U.S. business units in audit, tax, consulting and financial advisory services.
Echevarria was in that post when the financial crisis struck in 2008, a time he would call the most pivotal of his career, and one he said he told the Wall Street Journal he approached via one tenant, “to write the story today that we want to be written about us when this is all over,” Echevarria said. The approach was “let’s pretend we’re living it today and act in a way that we’d be proud of the choices that we made in those difficult times.”
“Every decision we took in that process really went through that lens… and quite frankly, it changed the way we thought about things, from the most mundane to the most complicated.”
Echevarria currently leads around 50,000 professionals across around 90 U.S. cities and India and plays an active role in Washington as part of the firm’s federal growth strategy.
In November 2012, Echevarria was one of 14 chief executives from the private sector who met with President Obama and Vice President Biden to discuss approaches for avoiding the fiscal cliff and told MSNBC that the coalition was able to communicate that the business community has tax reform as its structural priority, while the fiscal cliff was a short-term issue.
“We must create an environment that fosters exceptional businesses, and we look to our government leaders to help create this environment,” Echevarria told STEMblog in September 2013.
Echevarria has also led the firm’s efforts in information technology and research and innovation, among many others, and is a strong advocate of public-private partnership to advance the U.S. STEM workforce, economy and nation.
“Business participation in the process will result in more effective policies, restored confidence, and increased certainty, while creating a solid foundation for future growth… businesses, in all nations, should join in their country’s public policy debates in the collaborative spirit—a new way of partnering together to move our nations and the world forward—to help craft a prescription for the future.”
“We need bold vision and even bolder action to be truly innovative, we need to identify the constraints to getting beyond our current limitations and find solutions for the long term.”
Executive Mosaic extends its congratulations to Joe and the rest of the Deloitte organization.
