Executive Mosaic is honored to announce Richard Montoni, chief executive of MAXIMUS, as the newest inductee into the Washington 100, the premier group of leaders who drive innovation and growth at the intersection of the public and private sectors.
After serving as MAXIMUS’ chief financial officer and treasurer for four years, Montoni elevated to his current role in 2006 “during a transition period where the company faced significant challenges,” he told GovCon Exec.
“It was the best career move because it allowed me to draw successfully upon my prior experiences as a CFO and CPA to help drive our successes with the other talented members of our management team and with the full support of the board of directors.”
Montoni said some of his top priorities during this process were maintaining quality and controlling risk while settling outstanding legacy program issues, instituting growth and optimization-focused processes and divesting non-core businesses.
“We’ve come a long way as an organization and today we are very much in growth mode. Our growth over the past several years is a result of successfully leveraging a blend of people, process and technology to serve diverse beneficiary populations in high-profile and complex government programs.”
Montoni said that MAXIMUS follows a “multi-faceted” growth strategy and sees U.S. health reform as a long-growth driver for the company. The company has already leveraged its position as the leading operator of Medicaid and other public health insurance programs into Affordable Care Act opportunities and now operates two customer contact centers for the federal health insurance marketplace and six state-based health insurance exchanges.
In international markets, MAXIMUS recently purchased a health assessments provider in the U.K. and has launched “welfare-to-work operations” in the U.K., Canada, and Saudi Arabia after having related success in Australia.
“Fundamentally, economic and demographic factors are driving reforms around the world and MAXIMUS is well positioned to assist governments with meeting their program objectives,” Montoni said.
“We see considerable demand for our core services as governments around the world seek solutions to universal social issues, such as access to quality health care and income security through sustainable employment.”
Montoni is quick to point to MAXIMUS’ team as the “lifeblood” of the company, and noted recent decorations for CFO David Walker and the emergence of Bruce Caswell, president and general manager of the Health Services operation, as a “much sought-after speaker and subject matter expert on health insurance exchanges,” as two examples.
“Our team is compassionate, hard-working, experienced and knowledgeable, and their contributions often spark innovation, develop and refine our technology, and ultimately drive exceptional performance for the organization.”
This year represents our fifth annual Wash100 award selection. The Wash100 is the premier group of private and public sector leaders selected by Executive Mosaic's organizational and editorial leadership as the most influential leaders in the GovCon sector. These leaders demonstrate skills in leadership, innovation, achievement, and vision.
