Commenting on Peters’ first Wash100 recognition, Jim Garrettson, CEO of Executive Mosaic and creator of the award, said, “Mark is stepping into a decades-long legacy of excellence at MITRE. The accomplished executive’s first Wash100 win is a recognition of the gravitas he brings to the CEO position.”
“Succeeding previous CEO Jason Providakes‘ 35-year tenure and legendary CEO Al Grasso is no small challenge. Mark’s previous experience at world class laboratories and firms like Battelle, Argonne and Los Alamos situate him as uniquely qualified him in science, technology and national security,” Garrettson highlighted.
Peters’ Appointment as MITRE President and CEO
Peters took the helm of MITRE from Jason Providakes in September 2024. The scientist and national energy laboratory executive brings over 25 years of leadership experience in government, research and development and national security.
He most recently served as executive vice president for national laboratory management and operations at Battelle, and used to hold leadership roles at Idaho, Argonne and Los Alamos National Laboratories.
In his current role, Peters oversees approximately 10,000 MITRE personnel to advance innovation and enhance problem solving in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, national defense, public health, transportation safety and other tech areas.
Market-Leading Efforts at MITRE
“In just a short time as CEO, Mark is already overseeing major market-leading efforts in AI, cybersecurity and national defense. Impressive early contract wins like MITRE’s work on AI foundation model training, a $541 million Air Force contract and cutting-edge R&D in cyber reflect exceptional continuity of leadership. Mark’s vision and expertise are positioning MITRE for its next era of impact,” continued Garrettson.
MITRE launched a new computing capability in October 2024 to help government agencies train and deploy artificial intelligence foundation models in support of their missions.
The MITRE Federal AI Sandbox, a NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD-powed supercomputer, offers an exaFLOP of 8-bit AI compute performance that, according to Charles Clancy, senior vice president and chief technology officer at MITRE, “will be a resource for federal agencies to enable AI solutions.”
Under Peters’ leadership, MITRE also secured contract extensions from the U.S. Air Force and the National Institute of Standards and Technology in just two consecutive months.
The $541.3 million Air Force contract tasks MITRE to continue supporting the National Security Engineering Center as its administrator until Sept. 30, 2025. Meanwhile, the NIST award required the contractor to run the National Cybersecurity Federally Funded Research and Development Center until 2029.
“For more than 65 years, MITRE has been leading federal R&D to improve effectiveness and efficiency and drive innovation in government. Our systems thinking capabilities in AI, cybersecurity, transportation, health, and national security are more critical than ever given the complexity of our world,” Peters shared. “MITRE, government and industry leaders all play a pivotal role in safeguarding our nation, and because of that, I’m honored to be selected among the Wash100. Our collective innovation advances the safety and security of all Americans and the frontiers of science and technology.”
As the year progresses, Executive Mosaic looks forward to Peters’ continued MITRE leadership and he will take the not-for-profit organization next.
