Nokia Unveils Federal Business

In January 2024, Nokia Federal Solutions was launched with Loomis at the helm of the new entity focused on delivering innovative and secure platforms designed to meet the critical requirements and missions of U.S. federal agencies.

NFS develops new platforms and works to meet federal customers’ requirements by utilizing 5G, IP routing, microwave, optical networking, tactical private wireless and other technology offerings in Nokia’s product portfolio.

“With Nokia Federal Solutions, we are strengthening our commitment to support the U.S. government by investing in a dedicated entity to provide the technology, expertise, and local presence needed to help U.S. federal agencies achieve their mission goals,” said Loomis. “We are investing to become the U.S. Government’s trusted partner for 5G mission-ready solutions.”

Defense Market Expansion Push

Nokia acquired tactical communications system developer Fenix Group in May 2024. The initial announcement of the deal was made a month before the company unveiled Nokia Federal Solutions.

The acquisition aligns with the company’s efforts to advance its U.S. strategy and grow its defense business.

Commenting on the M&A activity, Loomis said, “Fenix‘s expertise in broadband tactical communications perfectly complements our existing offerings, and together we will be even better positioned to deliver high-performance, secure, and reliable solutions to our defense customers, helping them achieve mission-critical objectives.”

FIPS Certification

Under Loomis’ leadership, Nokia also received the Federal Information Processing Standards, or FIPS, 140-3 Security Level 2 certification for its Layer 1 optical transport platforms.

“Our FIPS 140-3 Security Level 2 certification demonstrates our dedication to providing cutting-edge solutions that meet the highest standards of data protection. We are proud to be the first in the industry to offer validated layer 1 optical transport ready for the quantum age,” Loomis said of the achievement.

Loomis has been with Nokia for over a decade. He joined the company through the acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent and was appointed executive vice president for Nokia’s webscale business.

The executive has more than 25 years of experience in working with both private and federal customers on technology innovations.
